发言题目:Focusing on attitudes and values in English language teaching

Global competence is the combination of four dimensions including examining issues, understanding perspectives, interacting across cultural differences and taking action, and each dimension builds on specific knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. Drawing on PISA Global Competence Framework, we suggest that English language teaching plays a crucial role in helping students to develop global competence. This talk focuses on attitudes and values in the global competence framework. It is believed that English language teaching not only provides opportunities for students to critically examine global and local issues, but also encourages intercultural sensitivity and respect by allowing students to engage in experiences that foster an appreciation for diverse peoples, languages and cultures.


专家简介:Miao Xingwei (苗兴伟) is a professor and dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China. He is currently Vice Director of the China Stylistics Association, Vice Director of the China Discourse Studies Association, Vice Director of the Association of English and Chinese Discourse Analysis, Vice Director of the China Ecolinguistics Association, Managing Director of the China English Language Education Association, and Managing Director of the China Pragmatics Association.

专题研讨:Research on English teachers’ beliefs and curriculum implementation of English teachers in Beijing rural high schools

Teachers’ beliefs have a huge impact on curriculum implementation, and rural areas have become the top priority in China’s education system. Therefore, this research investigates the overall situation of English teachers’ beliefs and English curriculum implementation in Beijing rural high schools to figure out the general teaching beliefs for rural high school English teachers. It also investigated the relationship between rural teachers’ beliefs and the general English curriculum implementation.


This research puts forward some suggestions from the perspective of teachers and trainee teachers in rural high schools to promote English teachers’ beliefs and improve their curriculum implementation ability.


专家简介:Chen Xinzhong (陈新忠) is a researcher at the Beijing Academy of Educational sciences. He is also a member of the working group for the National English Curriculum Standards for General High School (2017 Edition), a member of National Association of Foreign Language Education of the Chinese Society of Education; and deputy secretary-general of the Professional Committee on Teacher Development of Chinese Society of the Educational Development Strategy.

发言题目:The application of process assessment to the cultivation of rural middle school students’ English competence

This speech is about process assessment applied in English classes of rural high schools. Based on the data, the author described the establishment, the process, and the effects of the process assessment system used to cultivate the English core competence of high school students.


Through evaluation software, the motivation and reading skills of students were tested. It showed that extrinsic learning motivation was much higher than the intrinsic learning motivation, and students’ skills in understanding the main points of the author and analyzing the logical relationship between sentences were weak. Based on the above judgment, teachers used process assessment to carry out teaching improvement and established a process assessment system to promote English learning’s core competencies. The post-test results showed that the students improved their reading skills in all aspects. In addition, students’ extrinsic motivation decreased, intrinsic motivation increased, and balanced motivation markedly improved.


专家简介:Zhang Yanping (张艳萍) is an English teacher in the Beijing Fangshan District. She is a member of the English master studio and a director of senior three at the Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences, Zhoukoudian Secondary School. For three consecutive years, she has participated in the assessment and analysis of the English test papers of the Beijing College Entrance Examination.

The professional development of rural teachers has been a heated discussion. The speaker will analyze the current situation and constraints of English teachers in rural areas from the following aspects: educational background, teams, pedagogical content knowledge, educational ideas, and teaching design. Based on the English curriculum standards and the overall plan of regional education, pyramid-pattern teaching training, the speaker carried out projects and research to promote rural teachers’ development.


专家简介:Zhou Zhihui (周志辉)is a teacher-researcher of the Beijing Miyun Teachers Training College. She has been an English teacher working in rural Beijing since 2009. As well as receiving several honorary teaching titles, she won first prize in both the 2014 teaching contest of Beijing and the 2017 national teaching contest.

发言题目:L2 pragmatics: Interface between pragmatics and second language research

Second Language (L2) Pragmatics, also known as inter-language pragmatics, is the interface between pragmatics and second language research, which includes L2 pragmatic acquisition, pragmatic teaching and pragmatic assessment. To date, L2 pragmatics research has focused mainly on the investigation of speech acts and, to a lesser extent, conversational structure and conversational implicature. Although still in a periphery position in second language research, more research has been conducted into L2 pragmatics, as witnessed by a dramatically increased interest in the field, resulting in a large number of journal articles, monographs and edited books. This talk will review the history and current status of L2 pragmatics research, with a focus on Chinese learners of English. The talk will also analyze the problems and research trends in the field and discuss implications for learning and teaching pragmatics in the contexts of global communication and of EFL in China.


专家简介:Ren Wei (任伟)is a professor at the School of Foreign Languages, Beihang University, Beijing, China. His research interests include pragmatics and second language acquisition. His recent publications include articles in Applied Linguistics, Assessing Writing, Discourse Context & Media, ELT Journal, Intercultural Pragmatics, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, International Journal of Multilingualism, Journal of Pragmatics, Pragmatics, and System.

Many classroom English teachers often write papers based on their lesson studies. However, there are some common problems in these papers, such as vague or unfocused discussion, too much description of teaching procedures, shallow analysis and lack of logical argumentation, thus failing to convert practice, experiences and inspiration to valued strategies for designing and implementing English teaching activities. This workshop will illustrate how teachers can draw on their lesson studies and write high-quality papers on English teaching. The workshop is jointly delivered by two editors from Foreign Language Teaching in Schools (FLTS) and an experienced author.


专家简介

Cheng Xiaotang (程晓堂)is currently a professor of applied linguistic at the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Beijing Normal University. He holds an MA in language teaching and a PhD in functional linguistics. He teaches and researches discourse analysis, language education, syllabus design, materials development and teacher education. In the past years he has served as a key member of the English Curriculum Standards Panel, and has been extensively involved in the undergoing English curriculum reform in China.


Zhao Dongliang (赵东亮)is the vice editor-in-chief of the journal Foreign Language Teaching in Schools, Beijing Normal University.


Pan Zhengkai (潘正凯)currently works at Changzhou Senior High School of Jiangsu province as an English teacher and Director of Teacher Development Division of the school. He got his Master of Education from Zhejiang Normal University and is a doctoral candidate at East China Normal University.
