In 2014, the Ministry
of Education issued opinions on comprehensively deepening curriculum reform and
carrying out the fundamental task of fostering virtue, which puts forward the idea
of "Key competencies", and emphasizes the central importance of the
discussion and creation of an education system integrated with them. With the
further expansion and strengthening of basic education reform, cultivating
students' key English competences is increasingly held in high regard.
There are different
stages for the implementation of key English competencies in the curriculum.
However, a series of problems lie in the transition between the primary and
junior middle schools, due to the differences in textbooks, curriculum and
students' cognitive competence and model of thinking in different phases.
Seventh grade is a crucial stage for the transition. Based on the research of
seventh grade students and teachers in Wuhan, the authors expect to find these
problems and aims to propose effective solutions to realize the continuity of
English teaching in the two stages.
