The curriculum is the core component of
colleges and universities, which determines their competitiveness. Curriculum
development lays the foundation for major construction in higher education, and
it is a practical measure to improve the quality of education and teaching.
However, what exactly makes a high-quality curriculum? The nature of
high-quality courses will be dissected from the perspective of different
concepts and roles of the curriculum. Furthermore, taking the flipped classroom
design from the history and culture of English-speaking countries as a sample,
the aim and the critical factors of a course will be illustrated, thus showing
the possible ways to effectively integrate and coordinate all the factors to
achieve the goals of a course.

Developing contextualized materials for
grammar instruction
Zhao Meijuan (赵美娟),
Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai
The contextualized grammar instruction
approach, which is strongly advocated by the National Curriculum Standard
(2017), engages students in perceiving the form and function of grammar
structures and using them in meaningful, interactive activities. In our
recently developed EFL textbooks for senior high school students, we have
designed the grammar section in alignment with the National Curriculum
Standard. Based on our experience in developing learning materials, this paper
explains why grammar should be contextualized and explores ways to develop
materials for contextualized grammar learning.

The premise of designing and implementing
classroom English teaching activities is to choose appropriate texts. English
teachers need to know what kinds of texts are suitable to be used as English
teaching materials. After selecting texts, but before designing the teaching
activities, teachers need to grasp the content accurately. To do this,
educators must understand the meaning and form of texts, its type and
structure, the background, the content and subject meaning, the implied meaning
and function, the expected influence on the reader, the textual cohesion and
coherence, and the overall quality of the text. The results of text analysis
will enable teachers to design classroom teaching activities according to the
principles of purpose, rationality, and interaction.

This year’s sudden global outbreak of
COVID-19 has pushed online teaching onto the teaching stage ahead of time. Its
large scale, wide range, and deep influence have completely changed China’s
classroom teaching mode. Both teachers and students are trying to adjust.
However, when going back to school, many teachers and students feel the reverse
is still inadaptable. The reason is that the current online and offline
teaching model is in a state of serious fragmentation. How should the internet
and classroom teaching change in the post epidemic era? How can we effectively
follow up on our teacher training? This panel hopes to provide reference and
further thinking using cases from Guangdong.
In this session, participants will:
1. Identify the characteristics of
classroom teaching in the post epidemic era.
2. Study student-centered online teaching
design.
3. Study strategies of online and offline
teaching integration.
4. Understand the development trend of
teacher training in the post epidemic era.
