发言题目:Responding to what is read: Vision and mission of the EFL reading
classroom
发言专家:Ge Bingfang (葛炳芳), Teaching Research Section, Department of Education, Zhejiang
Language is mainly taught through reading
lessons, so reading instruction is a clear focus in China’s EFL classrooms. The
latest national English high school curriculum advocates four competencies: 1)
language ability; 2) cultural awareness; 3) thinking quality; and 4) learning
capacity. Therefore, in reading class, not only do students need to learn the
language, but the teachers also need to learn how to use strategies, train
thinking and develop cultural experience.
As Nuttall (1982) puts it, “interpretation
and response are the core of a text-based lesson”. Responding to what is read
will have an impact on students’ learning achievements, thus it should be
implemented in all classroom reading activities. The vision of the EFL reading classroom
is to create possibilities to help students become smart readers, promote their
responsive learning, and make real-life connections. In light of this, the
mission of a reading lesson is to use the text as a medium to train students
and create learning opportunities for students to reassemble what they read, to
question and evaluate the information they collect and express their own views.

发言题目:Integrating
Speaking into the Curriculum
发言专家:Liu Sen (刘森), East China Normal

Language ability is the ability to interpret
and express intended meanings that learners and users of English exhibit when
they perform language use tasks in a certain context or situation by applying
their linguistic and nonlinguistic knowledge and communicative strategies. This presentation attempts to redress the teaching of ‘speaking-as-skill’. By
analyzing learners’ needs and addressing their problems, priorities for the
teaching of speaking are mapped out. Approaches to deal with speaking skill-development
are discussed and ways of integrating speaking into language curriculum are
suggested.

This workshop presents the stage
achievements of the research. The teaching and research team has found a new
method for the cultivation of students’ higher-order thinking, which
effectively enhances their quality of thought after searching and studying
national and international literature. At the beginning of the workshop, the
host will give a brief introduction to the stage achievements. The second part
is a case study of three partners, who will introduce topics of the approaches
and methods for structuring, internalizing, and migrating language knowledge in
class. It will also cover the teaching pattern of double exploration and an assessment

A Study on personalized adaptive learning
of English vocabulary through AI technology
Ma Yuenian (马岳年) (Chair), Wuxi
Institute of Educational Science, Jiangsu
The current outbreak of the COVID-19 has an
enormous impact around the world, and school education in China is no
exception. However, like many industries, it requires the internet, Big Data,
and AI to play a key part in its future. This presentation is based on a
research project aimed at 1) catering to individual needs; 2) offering more
scope for student initiative; 3) encouraging exploratory learning.
English teaching and learning are facing
many challenges, including 1) how to take care of generality in large class
size teaching and individuality in individual counseling; 2) how to synchronize
and compromise collective learning in class and independent study after class,
and how to convert students’ passive learning to active exploring.
With the help of AI technology, this
research project attempts to meet the above challenges in order to lighten the
burden on teachers and students, while increasing the efficiency of English
vocabulary teaching and learning.

Help or hurdle: video captioning effects
of listening comprehension and vocabulary learning
Wu Huizhen (吴慧珍), Shanghai Business School, Shanghai
This study investigated how video caption types affected listening
comprehension and vocabulary acquisition in terms of form recognition, meaning
recall, and meaning recognition. A total of 158 Chinese EFL students of the
intermediate level were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the five
conditions: English caption (EC), English caption with highlighted target words
and L1 gloss (ECL1), Chinese and English caption (CEC), Chinese and English
captions with highlighted target words (CECHW), and a control group without
captions (NC). It was found that caption types affected listening comprehension
and vocabulary learning to a different degree. CECHW significantly facilitated
listening comprehension while other captions helped a little, indicating that a
full Chinese subtitle and highlighted keywords were beneficial in listening
comprehension. Pedagogical implications are made for language teachers’
adoption of captioned videos, together with suggestions for the future research
of captioned viewing.

Research on EGP+EAP blended
teaching/learning model
Zhu Lili (祝丽丽), Beijing Foreign
Studies University, Beijing
There is a gap between EGP and ESP in local colleges and universities.
English teaching faces problems such as uncoordinated teacher-student ratios,
inadequate supporting facilities, and a lack of qualified ESP teachers.
Therefore, learning from the relevant theories and achievements of blended
teaching/learning at home and abroad, the EGP+EAP model is proposed based on
current English teaching in local colleges and universities. This teaching
model helps to improve teaching philosophy and teaching levels, which
cultivates students’ independent learning ability, their skill in solving the
two imbalanced problems, and improves the overall quality of college education.
Zhu Lili is a Ph.D.
candidate at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. She works as an English
lecturer at Heze University, Shandong province, and her research interest
includes, contrastive and translation linguistics, lexical semantics, and second
language acquisition.
工作坊:Workshop on vocabulary teaching based on Backward Design
发言专家:Ji Xiaoting (冀小婷), Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin
Effective approaches to teaching vocabulary
seems to be a heated topic among teachers in primary schools, secondary schools
and even college. Teachers have tried various methods, but with less than
satisfactory results. This workshop aims to analyze and design vocabulary
instruction using the approach of Backward Design. The goal of the workshop is
to offer a new perspective in evaluating and designing lessons in this area of
instruction.
